SECONDARY SUITES
"Like all housing, secondary suites must be regulated. The city adopted a Secondary Suite program in 1999 and it is designed to balance the needs of the homeowner with the health and safety requirements that apply to all housing. Neighbourhoods must also be protected from potential negative impacts that unregulated suites may cause such as parking congestion, noise and unsightly premises. There are a number of advantages to legalizing a secondary suite in your home and most of them relate to the protection of your financial investment and, most importantly, the safety of your home’s occupants – both your family and your tenants." |

GARDEN SUITES
Neighbourhood Planning "Maple Ridge's Official Community Plan identifies garden suites as a possible option for modest density infill in urban, suburban and rural residential neighbourhoods. In the 2006 Planning Department Business Plan, Council authorized the Planning Department to undertake this study. Based on this direction, a discussion paper has been prepared that highlights the regulatory and technical issues that should be considered if pursuing Bylaws to allow Detached Garden Suites in Maple Ridge." |

SECONDARY SUITES
"An owner of property where a dwelling unit contains a lawful non-conforming use consisting of a secondary suite (dwelling unit) shall be billed for utilities based on two dwelling units." |
| New Westminster |
"A secondary suite is a dwelling unit that is accessory to a single detached dwelling and is comprised of one or more habitable rooms and intended for use as a separate and independent residence. A secondary suite contains sleeping facilities, a bathroom and cooking facilities that are for the exclusive use of the occupant(s) of the suite. Since July 6, 1998 the City has allowed owners of single detached dwellings in areas zoned for single detached or duplex dwellings to create one secondary suite (or authorize one existing suite) per property. Authorized secondary suites provide affordable ground-oriented housing that increases density but still allows the preservation of single detached dwelling neighbourhood character. The City's design standards ensure that authorized secondary suites provide safe, healthy and good quality rental housing."

SECONDARY SUITES
"Whether you are looking to add to the value of your home or simply require more space to accommodate a growing family, you may choose to install a Secondary Suite for your single family home. If you are considering such a project, you must ensure that new and existing suites meet all applicable safety standards and off-street parking requirements.
By taking a moment to review the proper procedures associated with Secondary Suites, you will pre-empt any legal issues or safety concerns."
